This will be the focus of the Olivette administration & Economic Development Commission.
Ladue developers Jay Williamson and Joe Bannister have put a $10 million dollar sports complex concept before the City of Olivette. The mayor of Olivette Missy Waldman looks at it this way: "We need to have this be a discussion item on our next council workshop and it needs to be the only item on the agenda." That would fall on Tuesday, June 11, the next meeting in the rotation. This is where council members dialogue at length issues of importance to the city. Williamson and Bannister are working on bringing a twin ice rink; outdoor turfed fields for the fastest growing sports, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. There will likely be no baseball, no football or other sports. Comments on the Olivette Patch have varied from strong support to …

Inspection delays means the business may not be able to open on time.
Ask a foremen on the job at the Family Dollar construction site at 9435 Olive Blvd. and you get a sense of frustration. Olivette oursources nearly all of its inspections, mechanical, electrical and plumbing to St. Louis County. Seems getting these inspectors coordinated can be a dicy issue. The work crew would like to finish up the installation of celing tiles. But until electrical lines are inspected, no go on this. The tile floor has been laid and the the place covered with drywall, but that's about it. The work is far from done when crews can set up shelves and stack sellable items. Carlos Trejo of the Olivette Building department is aware of all these issues. He knows pulling different inspectors together at the same time can be …

Find out why we could use a little help as we make preparations for a new project later this month.
At Patch, we're doing a little summer construction. Our team has been busy working on a new-look platform that we think is going to be a big improvement for users. If you want a sneak-peek of what it looks like, check out our east coast colleagues at Mineola Patch or New Hyde Park Patch for a frame of reference. But here's where I need your help. The new-look site will need a photo that will run at the top of every page. What image screams Olivette to you? Is it Stacy Park? Old Bonhomme School? City Hall? Give me some feedback, since I want the photos to be a reflection of what you think best represents the city. Better yet, we'd also like your photo suggestions. All we ask is that you only provide photos you own, and that the images not …

The bank is looking for a co-signer to continue future loans.
Hartke Nursery on Warson Road in Olivette could be in dire straits. Two things have happened to directly impact its business. First, the small business loan from BMO Harris, a Canadian bank, is being called in. The end could come as early as this September, according to co-owner Cindy Collins. She purchased the business along with her husband Jerry from Ralph and Pat Hartke in 2002. Second, the Olivette City council ignored the pleas of the Collins to rezone parking lots in April of 2011 to allow for the set up of temporary seasonal businesses. Planthaven Farms has been doing business during the summer months on the parking lot of the Olivette Bowling Lanes. Faced with a recession, loss of interest in gardening, summer droughts and extreme…

Draft ordinance proposed by the Wallis Companies to expand its business along Olive Street Road.
In a contentious issue which was discussed on the second night of Passover and council member Missy Waldman was unable to attend, the Olivette City Council decided Tuesday night to have a public hearing May 14th and re-visit this issue. After the public hearing, council members will be able to have a second reading and vote on this bill. Officials of the Wallis Companies came to the bi-monthly council meeting armed with drawings and plans, only to delay their presentation until mid-May. At stake is the right of Motor Vehicle Oriented Businesses to sell alcoholic products. Presently, the only establishments in Olivette available for package liquor sales are the two local liquor stores, Arena Liquor and Smoke Land and the two drug stores, …

The major east-west roadway runs from Chesterfield in West County all the way to the eastern edge of University City.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is looking to improve the traffic flow on Olive Boulevard, a road that has likely been the source of many a frustrated commute for St. Louis County drivers. Olivette drivers will be glad of that. The east-west street stretches from Chesterfield on one end to University City on the other, and MoDOT officials recently told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Ride Guy that they have hired a consultant to examine how its 47 traffic signals can be better synchronized. The move follows the completion of improvements to allow Highway 141 in Chesterfield to carry more traffic. MoDOT spokeswoman Linda Wilson Horn said the study will likely result in a few seconds being added to green lights throughout …

Paul Martin serves as the city attorney for University City, Olivette, Rock Hill, Crystal Lake Park and Ellisville.
When does the impeachment of a government official in Ellisville impact Olivette residents? When the cities share a city attorney. Paul Martin, Olivette's, also serves in that capacity for the cities of Ellisville, University City, Rock Hill and Crystal Lake Park. During the recent impeachment of Ellisville Mayor Adam Paul, Martin's name was featured prominently in media coverage of the hearings. Ballwin-Ellisville Patch noted on March 20 that the spotlight fell on "City Attorney Paul Martin, who embattled Mayor Adam Paul has said is acting out of a desire to preserve the hundreds of thousands of dollars he receives in legal fees through his work with the city." Ballwin-Ellisville Patch reported that Martin’s firm was paid more than $372,…

The project to build a new bridge over the River Des Peres should be completed by the end of the summer in Olivette.
Next week, St. Louis County officials will open bids on a project that will remove and replace the Dielman Road bridge between Olive and Page, with work expected to begin by June. The county's Department of Highways and Traffic Public Works department is moving ahead with the $600,000 project despite concerns raised by Olivette leaders who are worried about response times for police and fire calls.. In a report prepared for Tuesday's city council meeting, the city Public Works Department said it had alerted county officials to concerns over the ability of emergency vehicles to reach areas near the bridge if it were removed entirely and then replaced. Olivette Police Chief Rick Knox told Patch he didn't have a problem with the project. …

Was a time when Olivette could not get a single position on the board.
Know your geography? Ladue now has 4 of its 7 current board members who reside in the City of Olivette. That doesn't matter too much since all members serve at large, not in wards of the district. The four current members from Olivette are re-elected retired Ladue teacher Jeff Kopolow; Stacy Washington, Nancy Goldstein and Ken Smith. Andy Bresler lives in the City of Ladue and Sheri Glantz, and newly-elected member Dan Regelean hail from Creve Coeur. Kisa Lee fell short in a bid to become the fifth from Olivette to be elected to the board. Ladue will head into the 2013-14 school year with many changes. There will be a new fifth grade center on the West Ladue campus; Dr. Donna Jahnke is taking over as the newly-appointed Superintendent of …

What will happen to the baseball league that plays on the fields now? How will this benefit Olivette? Taxes? Sale of land? Can that land be sold? What will happen to the Community Center? Will Olivette not bring their existing plan (the past bond issue) back to the table...didn't it fail only by a few points? Will Olivette have any input in the design?   more ›
